SUN4WATER™ is our answer to diseases caused by drinking polluted water. It is an innovative device that delivers affordable clean drinking water and energy in areas that do not have access to safe drinking water or electricity. Our goal is to significantly lower rates of sickness and deaths due to drinking unsafe water, while simultaneously making safe drinking water accessible at a low cost. Sun4Water™’s water quality exceeds the universally accepted standards established by the World Health Organization.
Powered by a solar panel, the device is designed to be used in any location where there is sun and water, but where electricity is unavailable. Sun4Water™ cleans almost all unprocessed freshwater from different sources such as rivers, wells, taps, lakes, rain and water trucks. Our system does not work with sea water or ration contaminated water.
The purifying technology is a miniaturization of a solution successfully implemented by our partner, SparkleClean Tech based in India. The water is flushed by a pump through a pre-filter and a set of 3 filters and a reverse osmosis that clean the water down to 0.001 micron, making sure that no harmful viruses or particles remain in the water. Once the pump is powered, a sizeable amount of energy is available for other purposes. Part of this energy is used to guarantee the battery life, but the remaining energy can power one or two mobile phones and a few LED lamps. For example, a family of 10 living in Kenya would need two hours of sunshine to serve their daily requirement for clean drinking water, and have available sufficient electricity to charge 3 to 4 cell phones plus light up to 10 LED camping lamps.
The device is and has been active in Catania for two years, and several analyses have been performed on the drinking water to test its quality with respect to World Health Organization standards; the Fleming Lab in Milan (Italy) has certified the quality of the output water.
Our cost estimates predict that – once in full production cycle – SUN4WATER will cost $1 to $2 per person per year. Put differently, an estimated cost per liter is roughly US$0.0001. Our device cost is estimated to be US$600, serves on average 40 people, and has spare parts (extra filters and batteries) to last up to 10 years. The solar panel is guaranteed for 20 years by European laws.
We believe that the combination of an easy-to-use water filtration system and the capability to provide enough energy for charging phones (more and more common across the Sub-Saharan Africa) or lamps is a vital resource to solve the challenges of people who do not have access to clean drinking water and electricity.
